Chuck Hagel has been named by US President Barack Obama for the role of secretary of defence.
Hagel, a former Republican Senator and a Vietnam War veteran, is known for speaking his mind and voicing his criticism of the US-led war in Iraq.
The president has also selected John Brennan as nominee for the leadership of the Central Intelligence Agency.
